The history of the Chevy El Camino The Chevy El Camino used to be a Coupe utility pickup vehicle. If we think logically, El Camino is not a giant of a pickup, so it wouldn’t require an absolute beast of an engine. The company is hard working on its popular El Camino model that will be released in 2024. So, Chevrolet discontinued Chevelle in 1977, and the El Camino lasted for some while, until the final dawn of car-based trucks. In fact, according to data from Bring A Trailer, a 41-Years-Owned 1968 Chevrolet El Camino SS 396 4-Speed sold for 75,000 just last week. Chevy has a lot of engine options with all of its cars, so one can take their pick. Already in 1970s, buyers were looking for more practical vehicles for working duties. Chevy has a lot of engine options with all of its cars, so one can take their pick. The first El Camino was produced in 1959, 5 years before the Chevelle. Well, we can compare two iconic car-based pickups though their history. Automotive companies that didn’t adapt to the new age are crushed by the storm of SUVs and crossovers, and their versatility. ![]() Mom had started on dinner by the time I got home. Nobody’ll mess with you on my watch.įrom my stoop I watched him saunter on down the block until he turned the corner, out of sight. He promised to come running whenever someone gave me trouble. He told me a joke about a man from somewhere called Nantucket that made me laugh until I forgot about my ant stings. He walked me home, him swinging his bat at imaginary curveballs and telling me about how great practice went earlier. We’re all told as children not to talk to strangers, but this kid didn’t feel like a stranger at all. That was the first I could remember another kid being nice to me. “Your big brother is always looking out for you. ![]() “Don’t worry, little bro,” he said, squatting to clap me on the shoulder. Then I saw that way up at the peak of him the kid had a pushed-in nose like a pug dog and a big, warm, crooked grin beneath it. I shrunk back at first-Jason looked like he was hurt really bad, wasn’t moving or anything. The kid offered me a paw as leathered as a worn-out baseball mitt. He had to be at least twelve, I remember thinking that was ancient, back then. He was big everywhere, tall enough to splinter the sun into a hundred blinding rays, and thick-not a fat kid like I was then, but hard in the belly and the arms. There was hair curling up over the tops of his grass-stained socks, and he had knuckles on him the size of jawbreakers. Another boy stood over him holding a Worth Bat Company aluminum baseball bat with a dent in the middle. Jason Bigmore was flat on the ground, the back of his head an explosion of blood. I rolled over and saw Jason’s two goons bolting in opposite directions. The difference between kids and adults is that adults want years in advance, where kids only want what the moment demands, and they want it with everything they have. I didn’t know they couldn’t do that then, so mostly I just cried, being seven and all, and they laughed and laughed. They wanted me to lick the anthill-they called it eating hot sauce-and if I didn’t, they’d let those hungry red ants crawl into my ears and sting my brain. ![]() They called me the usual names and told me to stick your tongue out, pussy willow. This was a game we played most every day-sometimes I won, but this time around, two of them held me down by the arms while Jason smushed my face into the black dirt beneath the dead old oak tree out by the baseball diamond. It was five minutes after school let out, and Jason Bigmore and his fourth-grade friends had caught me before I could make it out of school grounds. I was seven when I first met my big brother. This story is my take on how that might play out in reality.” Someone more devoted to them than their own parents. I think a lot of kids secret hope for a guardian angel. Ever since I was little I wondered what it would be like to have an older brother who could be a constant companion like I never had, and maybe beat up bullies and things. “ Although I have a younger sister, I’ve always felt more like a single child, since we were never very close. ![]() ![]() Webb, being the farthest seeing telescope yet, can root out the youngest looking galaxies humanity can observe. The further into space scientists can look, the further back in time they can observe a galaxy. That means when we look at Canis Major Dwarf, we’re seeing it as it was 25,000 years ago. For example, the closest galaxy to ours is the Canis Major Dwarf Galaxy which is 25,000 light-years away, so its light takes 25,000 years to reach Earth. Its distance in light years translates to the number of years it takes for its light to arrive to Earth. When we look at a distant galaxy light years away, we aren’t seeing it in its most recent state. Eisenstein will use Webb’s cameras to “time-travel” back to when the earliest galaxies were forming right after the Big Bang. “One of the big purposes of telescopes is actually as time machines, because distance is look-back time,” says Daniel Eisenstein, an astrophysicist at the Harvard–Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. The Rubin Galaxy, named after the astronomer Vera Rubin, twirls in space 232 million light years away from Earth. ![]() Understand how early galaxies formed and grew Partially thanks to Webb’s size and infrared gaze, here are five things the telescope will allow astronomers to do. “Anytime astronomers get a new telescope, it's a kid in a candy store kind of thing,” says Smith. Its closest challenger, Hubble, works primarily in the visible and has a limited infrared-viewing range. It will be the only infrared-specialized telescope in space that can see long distances. Secondly, Webb views the universe in the infrared-the zone on the electromagnetic spectrum with slightly longer wavelengths than visible light. First, it’s big, with a 21.3-foot primary mirror that will make Webb the furthest-seeing telescope humankind has ever built. This latest space-bound contraption is unique because of two capabilities. it's the whole force of human creativity and all kinds of disciplines that push it there." ![]() The new observatory, which is slated to launch from northern French Guiana near the equator, is a joint collaboration between the space agencies of the United States, Europe and Canada. There’s really no telescope like Webb so far, he says. But Webb picks up where its predecessor falls short, says Eric Smith, Webb’s program scientist and chief scientist of NASA’s Astrophysics Division. Webb’s conception is inspired by the Hubble Space Telescope-the 31-year-old observatory famous for capturing stunning photos of our universe's galaxies. Lawmakers and scientists both have expressed concern that the project is siphoning funds from other research areas, but many other scientists say that Webb is worth the money and the wait. The telescope’s takeoff has now been delayed a decade, and its cost has risen roughly $9 billion over budget. ![]() After several holdups this year, NASA is set to launch the craft on Christmas. The James Webb Space Telescope, the much anticipated, revolutionary newcomer to the pantheon of space telescopes, is finally set to make a big splash-a welcome change from the waves its oft-delayed launch and ballooning cost have made. ![]() ![]() ![]() If this was a joke, the answer would probably be “slinging coffee.” But plenty of writers do support their families by working on TV shows and movies, coming up with original ideas to sell to movie studios, adapting existing IP, and doing lots of other writerly things. But this is the first strike since 2007-08. The WGA’s contract is renegotiated every three years. The goal of a strike is to force the AMPTP to negotiate, with the hope of reaching an agreement that both sides sign on to, and a new minimum basic agreement, or MBA - kind of like a minimum wage for writer jobs - with terms that will last for three years. It’s also noticeable to audiences, since some TV shows have to stop production, while others are delayed or truncated. Production slows down or stops, which means that all of the other people who work in the entertainment business - electricians, caterers, set dressers, directors, background actors - have to find other work. When writers strike, the ripple effects can be large, particularly for people who work in TV. I wasn’t planning on it, but lots of people in those sectors would be affected, too.) Members of the WGA on strike in 1988, in Los Angeles. However, I can’t sell any scripts or options to a struck company for the duration of the strike. ![]() (That includes me: I’m a member of the Vox Media Union, which is part of the WGA East, and thus in the online media sector. Members of the WGA who work in broadcast TV, radio, streaming news, online media, nonfiction podcasts, nonfiction TV, and public TV will stay on the job. For most writers, this also means forgoing income from writing for the duration of the strike. No member of the WGA will write new scripts for TV shows or movies until the WGA membership votes to end the strike. In simple terms, a writers strike means that a subset of the members of the Writers Guild of America (WGA), the labor union to which most working writers in Hollywood belong, will stop working until the WGA reaches an agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). So here are five questions about the WGA strike, why it matters, and what it might mean for you and for the future of entertainment. But they’re significant moments in cultural history, and often have to do with different aspects of the business trying to figure out how to deal with the giant technological advances that drive Hollywood.ĪI should scare Hollywood writers - and everyone else At most, we have hazy memories of strikes from years past, maybe wondering why some seasons of The Office seem shorter when we stream them. Writers strikes are something the average person doesn’t have to think about most of the time. ![]() ![]() The WGA membership had previously voted to authorize a strike, by a historic margin: 97.85 percent voted yes. Spending on original streaming content grew from $5 billion in 2019 to $19 billion in 2023 - the lion’s share of it by Netflix, which reported $6 billion in operating profits in 2021 and $5.6 billion in 2022. Meanwhile, according to the WGA’s calculations, industry profits have ballooned from $5 billion in 2000 to $28-$30 billion from 2017-2021. The AMPTP’s counter-proposal is an increase of about $86 million per year. According to the WGA’s proposals chart, the guild’s proposals would gain the writers about $429 million in total per year. The last time there was a writers strike, in 2007-2008, work stopped for 100 days and cost $2.1 billion to California’s economy alone. The WGA’s contract with the AMPTP ended at midnight on May 1.Ī strike carries profound economic implications. “The companies’ behavior has created a gig economy inside a union workforce, and their immovable stance in this negotiation has betrayed a commitment to further devaluing the profession of writing.” “Though we negotiated intent on making a fair deal - and though your strike vote gave us the leverage to make some gains - the studios’ responses to our proposals have been wholly insufficient, given the existential crisis writers are facing,” the negotiating committee wrote to membership in a letter. After six weeks of negotiation with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), the Writers Guild of America - which represents approximately 11,500 people who write the Hollywood shows and movies we watch in theaters and at home - announced that its membership would walk off the job starting at 12:01am PT on May 2. ![]() ![]() ![]() If she keeps this up, I might have to look into art schools in the future. The connections between art and math are strong and frequent, yet few students are aware of them. She added windows, roof designs and a little door knob to a lot of them. I love the results of her hard work and creativity. This project kept her quite engaged, and she kept coloring and coloring until her vision was complete. Once she had traced all she wanted, I just encouraged her to make them look like a house and use a variety of colors. Abigail traced around her template onto roll out paper, so she had plenty of room to go as big as she was inspired to go. It may even be better suited for older grades, but Abigail seemed to really enjoy it, so it is up to you to know your own child. I would say 6 would be the youngest I’d go with this activity, unless your child is extremely skilled at tracing. I helped her line it up and hold it in place at times. I let her do a lot of this on her own, and I would say at age 6 she could just do it. I had used stock paper (a bit stiffer) for the template because I knew she had to trace around it. Once finished, she decided this looked like a house to her, so we went with it. Have a few goes at it and see what you like best. You may not get something that looks like anything on the first try. She chose option B, and you can see her process above. The other option, I said, was to just go for it and draw something, cut it out, tape it back together like I showed her and then see if it looks like anything to her once she did that. I told her she could try and think of an image she wanted to create that might be able to fit together. I added a little face so Abby could see how I had a fish in my mind. The picture obviously shows I taped it together. ![]() I chose to then take another shape from the bottom and move it to the top. You want to cut out a shape on one side and move directly to the opposite side. I had a fish in mind when I set out on this project, but I wanted to keep it very simple for my daughter’s sake…oh, and my own. I wanted to show Abby an example of how it worked in real life, so I did my own little example, taking pictures along the way so I could share it with you. This was stock paper (just a bit thicker than normal paper). The first thing I did was fold the paper so I had rectangles. Abby played with this for a bit before we moved on to the craft. This game really helps you understand how to make a tessellation that will fit together and work. The next thing I had her do was to play this tessellation game I found on PBS kids website. It was fun to watch her try and see how the images fit together. Here is a picture of Abby discovering some of his tessellations for the first time. Therefore, as I was trying to think of what new craft I wanted to do with my kids, I decided to look into some of my own favorite artists for inspiration. If you are going to paint in an impressionist style, then study impressionist artists and their work prior to exploring this style of art with your own kids or students. One of the things my teacher emphasized is to not just do art projects to do art projects but to always tie them in to an art history lesson. I have a degree in education and my class on teaching art had to be one of my favorites. When I was in college I learned the importance of teaching art to kids. Escher has inspired some of the ideas you see today. Tessellation artwork has always been so interesting to me, and I was happy to discover a way to make it accessible as art for kids. ![]() ![]() Title: package slack (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: trying to overwrite '/usr/share/ lintian/ overrides/ slack', which is also in package slack-desktop 4.11.
